Sadly, I missed out on tabletop roleplaying in my high school and college years. I didn’t discover the hobby until my mid-twenties when my uncle (beyond disbelief that I had never played) insisted he remedy that problem!
He introduced me to Basic D&D (Mentzer red box version) and unsurprisingly I was hooked! This was in 2011, so the current edition of D&D was 4e (specifically the Essentials line) and I bought all the core products. I am a 4E fan. I said it. I think it was a great fantasy game with some of the best tactical combat rules I’ve ever seen. I also understand why some people hate it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Moving on, I discovered BRP and that was pretty much it for me. I only played BRP for about 10 years. It was BRP where I really started to tinker with the system and developed an interest in designing my own game. I actually started working on a percentile based game first, and then decided to retcon everything and go with a 2d6 mechanic. I’ll explain the design change in later posts, but suffice to say I fell in love with the simplicity, versatility, and accessibility of two little cubes (because who doesn’t have some right?)
After scrutinizing over several options I decided to call my system Universal Lite (rules for) Tabletop Adventures or ULTRA D6 (I think it sounds cool and it’s also fitting). It is meant to be a universal toolkit for gaming that is easy to learn and run and doesn’t require hundreds of pages and hundreds of dollars.
